In 2022, when the Sarasota Orchestra performed the “Iconic Songs of the 70’s” show that I had orchestrated back in 2015, I was asked to create an overture for the fireworks. The requirements were not very clear and upon asking the musicians, they had no clue what this overture was either! But I was also working on a recording project for the Film Scoring Academy of Europe so it was enough to to use this piece for both projects. I was not surprised that they did not use it for the fireworks. . .
The film-scoring brief was to use the full brass section for heroism and high drama. I was to use a strong horizontal theme (singable!), along the lines of an opening title. I was to use an ABA form, possibly using a secondary dominant at the end of the B section, and have a triumphant ending.
In other words, write a big, traditional, opening title along the lines of “Indiana Jones” or “Star Wars”. I think it was very successful. I do have the tracks from the film scoring session and someday I will have time to mix it! For now you get to hear the synth mockup.
