This project used live studio woodwinds to depict a setting or location. I chose the Balkan region and Carpathian mountains and was so thankful to find this video clip on The Cue Tube. I had to do some editing to get the video within my assignment parameters.
I would have liked to have 2 clarinets to have a drone, but we don’t always get to choose our assignmnets! The 3+2+2+2 meter is not uncommon in this part of the world and the musicians were from Bulgaria, so I was placing my hopes that it would not be a foreign groove for them. The clarinet player jumped right on it and then I knew it would all work!
I started with a Bulgarian scale and then morphed into a bit more modern use of harmonies. The harmonies are simple and the rhythms and melodies are catchy. I recorded the drums as a quick scratch but they worked well so you hear them in the final production.
I still struggle with the mix as mixing is not my specialty. Hopefully you will hear the excitement and dance-like vibe in the music. This is a mix of the live instruments with some synth tracks.
